Sažetak
The development of literacy is a process that is gradually taking place from birth to the school age, but also through entire life. Literacy skills are needed from the earliest school experiences up to the grown up age to increase participation and influence of the individual in society. Augmentative and Alternative Communication Systems (AAC) enable children with developmental difficulties and complex communication needs (CCN) to develop lite- racy. Individual approach and selection of appropriate AAC interventions help to meet (pre)conditions for developing literacy in children with developing disabilities and complex communication needs. ABC Maestro is a pedagogic-rehabilitation program for learning of reading, writing and the use of keyboard in children who are unable to acquire pen and paper literacy. The program uses traditional literacy learning methods but offers a more innovative approach to learning through the use of keyboard, for those children who need an alternative approach to literacy learning. ABC Maestro is designed for children with developmental disabilities who learn to read, write and are learning to use the keyboard. It can also be used by all children who are learning the basic literacy skills. Literacy learning of children with developing disabilities can be very demanding task and it is often slow. ABC Maestro can serve therapists, teachers and parents as a faster, alternative approach to writing and reading instructions. The program also features a progress tracking system and rewards for each child's attempt and success.
