Sažetak
Language modules for more than thirty languages have been created by NooJ, a linguistic development environment. So far, such projects have not included resources for the Latin language. This paper marks the beginning of creating a linguistic model for medieval Latin in the NooJ programme. Classical Latin continued to be used after the fall of the Western Roman Empire (476 AD), and it became a lingua franca of medieval Europe. Medieval Latin underwent spelling, morphological, syntactic, and semantic change, which was characteristic for all of Europe, but local variation also developed due to very specific historical and political frameworks and linguistic situations. For the purposes of this paper, we have processed a corpus consisting of 385 last wills and testaments, drawn up between 1209 and 1409 in the Zadar commune. Of these, 301 wills have already been published in hard copy and 84 are manuscripts kept in the State Archives in Zadar. We scanned and digitally processed all the printed wills in an OCR program, and we transcribed the unpublished handwritten wills. After we created a digitally readable text, we compiled a dictionary and processed nouns from that corpus. On the basis of this dictionary resource, we created a NooJ inflectional morphological grammar with 47 paradigms. Furthermore, we built a morphological grammar for the most frequent orthographical variants and a syntactic grammar, which solve the problem of damaged, i.e. reconstructed, texts.
