Sažetak
The need for more active involvement of citizens in decision making in order to achieve sustainable development is growing. The traditional approach to education is no longer sufficient and it is necessary to apply methods that will encourage active involvement of students, develop critical and creative thinking, change attitudes and problem solving. The method that can be used to strengthen the social responsibility of citizens, which is the driver of change needed to implement sustainable development, is the method of academic service learning. Therefore, the subject of this paper is the adoption of civic competencies by innovating the teaching process of the professional study of Hospitality Management at Karlovac University of Applied Sciences. The aim of this paper is to analyze the importance of civic competencies from the perspective of employers in tourism and hospitality in the cooperation with above mentioned University. The main findings include affirmative attitudes of employers in tourism and hospitality about the importance of acquiring civic competencies in the teaching process of undergraduate professional study of Hospitality Management at Karlovac University of Applied Sciences through academic service learning.By comparing the attitudes of experts (employers in tourism and hospitality), civic competences were graded according to importance. The limitation of the research refers to the number of units of the sample, since the sample consists exclusively of employers who have some previous experience in acquiring civic competencies in the teaching process through academic service learning. Recommendations for future research relate to increasing the number of sample units including more institutions of higher education in the field of tourism and hospitality in the research process. Descriptive pilot study was conducted by interviewing experts in the summer and autumn of 2020 using an in-depth structured interview as a research method, and the obtained data were processed using descriptive statistics.
