Sažetak
An unusually strong bora over the Adriatic Sea, on 2 December 1983, with northerly throughout the troposphere is described. It is associated with an intense upper level through and cold air core in the lower troposphere moving from Central Europe to the Mediterranean where the cyclone was formed in southern Italy. The field of vorticity, divergence and vertical motions, calculated by the kinematic method, are presented at standard isobaric levels 850, 700 and 500 mb, as well as the orographically forced vertical motions. These distributions are compared with the same fields on 6 March at 00 UTC. It is shown that the eastern part of Croatia has sinking motions due to divergence on all three isobaric levels, whereas the western part, including the north Adriatic has convergence and associated rising motions. Sinking motions appear along the coast in both cases at the surface level as a result of orographic forcing. This confirms a shallow bora layer above that the slow ascends is the results of cyclonic activity in the Mediterranean.
