Sažetak
The role and position of Croatian scientific journals in the context of the Croatian scientific policy will be discussed from three perspectives. Firstly, data on financing by the Ministry of Science will be presented and analysed. This concerns the overall financing of scientific books and journals, as well as scientific associations and conferences in the period 2000-2016, and the more detailed data on financing of scientific journals in the period 2011-2015. Despite the changes of criteria in that period which warns against straightforward generalizations, the available data show patterns of financing among different scientific fields. Secondly, criteria on financing will be presented and discussed. This concerns changes of criteria in the last ten years (what has been changing and why) and reasons for differences in criteria among different scientific fields. While current criteria for social science and humanities journals include at least some aspects of qualitative assessment by members of the Committee for Publication of the Ministry of Science, journals in other scientific fields stick to quantitative ones. Thirdly, the impact of financing on both quality of journals (according to data on their visibility and impact) and on survival strategies, mainly in terms of obtaining of additional funding, will be analysed. In that context the possible impact of changes of criteria for scientific promotion in Croatia on Croatian scientific journals will also be addressed.
