Sažetak
Within the glyptic collection of the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb, which contains more than 400 pieces, there are 134 engraved gems from Sisak (ancient Siscia in Pannonia Superior). Among the Sisak gems in the collection, a group of 13 convex prasios can be singled out. They belong to the group of small translucent green chrome chalcedonies, characterized by their convex or bi- convex shape and the choice of classical motifs. The gemstones probably came from central Anatolia, Turkey. One possible workshop of these engraved gems was recognized in Aquileia, and other examples were mostly found in Pompei, Carnuntum, Britain, and Gaul. Engraved gems of this group were mainly produced throughout the first century A.D. From thirteen Siscian prasios, eight were mounted in iron rings. Four of these rings are dated to the first century A.D., three are dated to the first century A.D. - beginning of the second century A.D. and one ring is dated to the second century A.D. Siscian prasios were engraved with deities, busts, bucolic and sacro-idyllic scenes. Furthermore, thirteen green glass gems of convex shape were found in Sisak, as imitations of convex prasios. Among them, five were mounted in iron rings, dated to the first century A.D.Although the Sisak convex prasios and green glass gems are lacking their archaeological context, they nevertheless expand our knowledge about that specific group of Roman engraved gems.
