Sažetak
Role of the Church in rediscovery and reception of Roman law in Europe during the Middle Ages has been widely discussed in the literature. Nevertheless, with regard to the tracing of Roman legal elements present in the legal system of Crusader States, in first place in the Kingdom of Jerusalem, intermediary function of the Church remained in the background. In the relevant studies, history of Latin Church and the reception of Roman law were researched separately. However, the links are not missing. Prominent is the role of William, archbishop of Tyre, well-known for his Historia rerum in partibus transmarinis gestarum, or Historia Hierosolymitana (finished in 1184). In Historia, XIX, 12, he wrote that he attended classes of quattuor doctores in Bologna and learnt both laws around the mid-12th Century. In this paper it is investigated into the presence of elements of his learning in Historia and William’s possible role in the transmission of Roman legal learning in the Kingdom of Jerusalem, both in his role as archbishop and chancellor.
