Sažetak
Aim: The aim was to explore the effect of self-efficiency in management of masseter myalgia. Materials and methods: Twenty- four cases with masseter myalgia of more than 3 months in duration were analyzed. Age range was 13-65 years (median 20, interquartile range 15-34), and majority were females (88%). The treatment included counselling, home self- massage and thermal therapy. Cases were monitored three months after the end of treatment for pain free mouth opening, pain intensity at rest and during mastication, and headache. The degree to which an individual feels capable of effectively managing his or her health outcomes was assessed by the Perceived Health Competence Scale. Results: Self- management reduced pain and improved mouth opening after one month (p≤0.045). Three months after the start some relapse occurred, but not statistically significant. Reduction of pain at rest and during mastication was significant even after three- month period (p≤0.003), but not for headache and mouth opening. Half of the patients had higher health competence (≥33 scalar points) and similar pattern was seen in subjects with higher and lower health competence after one month. Subjects with higher health competence demonstrated tendency towards reducing the relapse of the effect of treatment in three-month period (in both the amount and incidence) when compared to those with lower health competence, but it did not reach level of statistical significance. Conclusion: A sense of competence in the domain of health behavior could be a factor that modifies success of treatment of chronic masseter myalgia in long term.
