Sažetak
Over the last few years, the concept of autonomous vessels has been attracting the attention of shipping companies, seafarers as well as states and international organizations dealing with shipping and marine environment protection. Unmanned ships’ exploitation seems to be just behind the corner, while operation of fully autonomous vessels based on IT solutions and controlled by the artificial intelligence, will probably not become technically feasible in the near future. There are many ongoing research projects on legal, technical, economic and social issues of autonomous vessels. What seems to be underexplored are the axiological issues of AI design in shipping, while it is crucial to adopt ethics into deductive decision making of artificial intelligence that will be used on board unmanned ships. This paper will analyze and asses the challenges that flow from AI based solutions in case of conflict of values between the principles to protect the marine environment and human life, emphasizing the need of setting the future regulatory approach for emerging exploitation of AI based autonomous vessels. It seems crucial to establish them now in order to include them into the current designing process and future regulatory approach.
