Sažetak
The article gives an interpretation of the stylistic interdependence of biblical symbols in the poem. The meaning of the word cross in different contexts in the poem is set forth in detail. Other important repeated symbols are stressed and explained in the context of the building of the protagonist’s character, especially the word things. With respect to an approach in the classroom, it is also suggested that students might render the poem’s story with the use of Doré’s illustrations, while tables with the roles of the characters and romantic elements are also suggested. Students could also play the roles of noted and opposing critics, producing debates on the poem.
