Sažetak
In the paper I'm analyzing the influence of the West at the memory construction of the East, using artistic practices occupied with politics of memory as the sample. In the context of Walid Raad and Monument Group's art projects I will analyze the concept of political subjectification, reffering to Ranciere's definition which defines political as formating relationship towards an Other. In the terms of political subjectification I will provide an answer to dilemma's proposed by both art projects: is it possible to write history of event which include extreme physical and psychical violence? Walid Raad's project Atlas Group researches the problems of Libaneese Civil War presentation and the construction of the memory. Raad's position proposes that official, conventional and chronological written Libaneese Civil war history is partial and compromised by Western geopolitical interest. Using the methodology of the archives, Raad studies the mechanism's of production of history and memory and subsequently creates imaginary manipulative control narratives which reproduce Western methods use in constructing the memory of the Others. The Monument Group was initially formed as discussion group which has actively commented on the competitions for the Monument dedicated to wars on the territory of former Yugoslavia by Belgrade City Municipality. Discussion group pointed at the impossibillity of naming of the monuments and non-critic perception of Serbia state's part in the wars indicated. After the withdrawal of the competition, a section of discussion group continued their efforts under a Monument Group name. In the paper I will refer to their work regarding Srebrenica genocide. Their analysis of excavating and burying the genocide victims points the reduction of the victim's identity to religious and national terms, which reproduces the ideological concept which served as the basis for such crimes, and still serves as retroactive continuity of the politics of terror. Monument Group holds that genocide and war casualties can be spoken of only in term of the political. Key words: Walid Raad, Monument group, politics of memory, political subjectivization
