Sažetak
The paper presents the results of two interconnected studies. In the first study 309 subjects from 55 to 94 years of age were surveyed to establish how well the elderly citizens were familiar with their rights, and which of their rights were most violated. The results indicate, firstly, that such knowledge is, in general, very limited and, secondly, that major abuse happens in two categories of rights, i.e., security and personal dignity and using the existing and learning new knowledge and skills. These findings led to a qualitative study in which 32 elderly subjects were interviewed. The results suggest that social withdrawal of the elderly is the outcome of many factors, including their feeling of being socially useless and unsupported in learning new skills. Both studies led to the development of a comprehensive intergenerational learning programme aiming at the empowerment of the elderly.
