Sažetak
The order-picking, process of retrieving items from storage locations in response to a specific customer request, is the most laborious and the most costly activity in a typical warehouse. A typical distribution of the order picker's time among picking activities shows that generally 50% of total order picking time is spent on traveling. Therefore, one of the warehouse designer's objectives should be the optimization of travel distances during picking process. Reducing travel distances by using a specific routing policy in determining the sequences and routes of travelling is well proven. There are several routing heuristics, form very simple to more complex, and also an optimal algorithm, with performance depending greatly on the particular operating conditions of the system under study. Assigning items to storage locations using some type of volume-based storage policy can also reduce travel distances significantly. Each type of storage influences particular routing policy's performance dissimilarly. In this paper an extensive simulation analysis of routing and storage policies and their interactions is presented. The best combinations of routing policies and storage types are identified, along with the pros and cons of using simple heuristics, complex heuristics or optimal algorithm.
