Sažetak
This thesis is a corpus-based study focusing on the lexical and pragmatic analysis of the adjectives expressing happiness in English and Croatian. The two adjectives chosen for the analysis are happy and sretan. Within the scope of lexical analysis it was looked into formulaic expressions, names, verbs, first person personal pronouns, intensifiers, collocations and sequences of adjectives that were combined and used with happy and sretan. Pragmatic analysis looked into the contexts in which the chosen adjectives were used, and tried to establish patterns of that usage. The thesis used two web corpora as its sources of material in an effort to study everyday colloquial language, and see the way in which speakers use the two chosen adjectives. In addition to conducting lexical and pragmatic analysis, the thesis also looks for similarities and differences the two languages in question may exhibit.
