Sažetak
This paper is inspired by a number of covers which caused controversies in the Croatian society but also prompted the reactions of certain journalists and Croatian public. To begin with, we will contextualize the Newspaper Novosti, explain how they’re funded, who are journalists writing for Novosti, what is being discussed in their covers, who are the recipient of the message, and does that message translate into a successful form of satire or is it insulting. The corpus consists of Novosti's covers which are available in the digital editions from their 674 to 940 issue. Since each cover consists of visual and verbal elements, to analyze them, we will use the instrumentation of multimodal stylistics and rhetoric. We will put focus especially on Fowler's theoretical works on the analysis of journalistic language and title, and on the book Reading Images by Gunther Kress and Theo Van Leeuwen since semiotics has been proved to be the most suitable for studying multimodal discourse due to the presence of different sign systems.
