Sažetak
In spite of an increased pace and vigor of scholarly studies devoted to various cultural aspects of the modernity of the former socialist countries, the particularity of some individual themes in the context of the mutual relations between the “margins” and the “center” has still not adequately been explored. At the same time, in the local settings, the politicization of society and the identity crisis are additional obstacles in the way of any overall comprehension of the continuity of modernity in essentially changed circumstances of social and ideological structure. Thus studying the built heritage of the era of Fascist Italy in Croatian regions can contribute to better understanding of architectural modernism, devoting special attention to the collective memory which till now remained out of historical surveys. The proposed paper aims to examine the position of modernism in architecture and town planning, presenting the most important projects realized in Istria during the Italian authority, with special attention to its regional characteristics as interpretations of the paradigm. The first theme deals with miners towns Arsia and Pozzo Littorio, analyzing typology, standards of social housing and symbolic values of its public spaces in comparison with contemporary Italian and Central European architecture. The second theme deals with controversial urban interventions from the 1930ies in Pola typical for its selective preservation of Roman architecture, as well as the most representative buildings such as Post office (Angiolo Mazzoni) in the cultural and political context of the 1930ies, including the position of leading architects between politics and avant-garde. The third part focuses on the monuments, designed to communicate the various symbolic meanings of the power and politics in public spaces, which were dislocated and destroyed immediately after the 1945. Identified with politics of Fascist regime, in postwar political and ideological circumstances the heritage of Italian modernism became a part of “forgotten” history.
