Sažetak
To ensure a high level of safety and environmental protection, the Republic of Croatia as an EU member should comply with the EU legal framework. Marine environment threats are listed as one of UN sustainable development goals, while those posed by human actions are especially highlighted due to its ecological, economic and social negative effects. The shipping industry recognizes ship waste as one of the main environmental priorities. Although MARPOL efficiently regulates waste discharges from ships at sea, the problem can arise when ports aren’t adequately equipped for waste management. The revised Directive (EU) 2019/883 on port reception facilities for the delivery of waste from ships should serve as the main legal tool for the management of waste from ships in ports. This paper aims to give an overview of Directive (EU) 2019/883 on port reception facilities for the delivery of waste from ships, and challenges for implementation in the Republic of Croatia.
