Sažetak
The relationship between the Catholic Church in the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) towards the Third Reich should primarily be viewed through the prism of relationship to the NDH authorities. The Church had to maintain the communication with its authorities, on which the German presence in the NDH had significant influence. However, the leading personalities of the Church continued to look unfavourably at National Socialism, and these views did not remain unknown to German representatives in Croatia. The NDH authorities and the ruling Ustasha Movement were not opposed to the Church. However, most Croatian bishops and priests were critical of their activities. In this context, the Church led by the Archbishop Stepinac focused on the assistance and rescue of those persecuted by the NDH authorities. In complex circumstances of the civil war, the Church continued to communicate with the NDH authorities and did not directly commit itself to any of the other “domestic” sides in the war.
