Sažetak
Karst poljes are one of the largest and most prominent karstic features, defined as large, flat-floored depressions developed within carbonate rocks. Poljes are formed by combined processes of tectonics, erosion, and karstification of soluble rocks, that generated various depositional environments (lacustrine, fluvial, glaciofluvial, etc.). Thus, they can serve as important natural archives of long- term and short-term Quaternary environmental changes. The best examples of karst poljes can be found in the Dinarides, where they served as important economic and agricultural centers from ancient times and remained practically the only fruitful regions within the barren karst. As such, they offer excellent sites for multidisciplinary studies (palaeolimnology, geomorphology, archeology) of palaeoenvironmental changes governed by dynamic climates of the Late Quaternary and human influences. Here, I will present several karst poljes in Dalmatia (Croatia) that are currently being studied by the palaeolimnological research group of Croatian Geological Survey, current results, and future perspectives.
