Sažetak
The relationship between art and politics has been a constant subject of study challenging philosophers, aestheticians, art historians and many other academics who were and still are trying to determine their boundaries and mutual interweaving. This thesis deals with the relationship between Croatian's former policy and independent art practices during the war times in 1990's. Throughout these years, the Croatian contemporary (conceptual) art movement faced countless political pressures which often manifested themselves in lack of funds, thus driving the independent art scene to look beyond the borders and seek financial support from the international community. Furthermore, the thesis examines the relationship between ideology, democracy and public space as it relates to contemporary critical art practices. With the background context, the paper analyses the politically charged works of Dubrovnik based multimedia artist and activist Slaven Tolj whose activities are a prime example of art’s influence on politics.
