Sažetak
In addition to the physical description of towns and villages he visited, an important part of Evliya Çelebi’s travelogue was devoted to depiction of different peoples and their customs. Vivid descriptions of foods and beverages reveal the author’s perceptiveness and attention to detail, as well as his connoisseurship. This paper will, firstly, focus on the patterns of drinking culture in the Western Balkans, especially Bosnia and Croatia, as observed by Evliya Çelebi. Secondly, the paper will analyze drinking culture in general context, i.e., canonically allowed types of beverages mentioned in the travelogue, whose status had been somewhat ambiguous, but were generally permitted by Islamic law. Finally, the paper will analyze Evliya’s personal attitudes towards various types of drinks and the origins of his connoisseurship.
