Sažetak
Illusionistic painted altars made their entrance in Croatian cultural heritage from the fourth decade of the 18th century with the first known altar in Saint John the Baptist Chapel in Gorica near Lepoglava (1731, I. B. Ranger), and a growing number of examples can be dated from the sixth decade up until the end of the 18th century. Among these altars one can find examples which reflect carefully thought-out compositions in relation to the architecture in which they are situated, and they constitute a unity with the ceiling or overall wall paintings. These altars are often depicted in monumental scale making wall paintings in interiors the most active factor in accomplishing post-Trident Theatrum sacrum. Furthermore, their structures are identified as a reflection of ceremonial sacred stage designs (for Forty Hours' Devotions to the Blessed Sacrament or for the Holy Sepulchre) and well-known solutions from Andrea Pozzo's Perspectiva pictorum et architectorum treatise. This presentation also puts emphasis on specific solutions that incorporate painted altars in overall wall paintings, among which one can notice various approaches to the illusionistic transformation of built architecture in the oeuvres of the most prominent painters of 18th century wall paintings in Croatia, Ioannes Baptista Ranger and Anton Joseph Lerchinger.
