Sažetak
In a study conducted on members of national majority from Croatia (483 respondents) and Serbia (484 respondents), we investigated various forms of national attachment (national identity, nationalism, national pride, constructive and blind patriotism). Our goal was to explore the relations between these constructs and to compare these relations in two countries. We were also interest-ed in similarities and differences of socio-demographic determinants of these various forms of national attachment in both countries.Psychometric analysis proved Croatian and Serbian translations of the applied measures as reliable and their factor structure invariant and comparable to original. Although there is a widely use of these constructs as interchangeable and almost as synonyms, correlational analyses show weak to moderate correlations between them, and even no relations in some cases. Stronger national identity in Serbia is more related to behaving according to national customs, nationalism and blind patriot-ism then to constructive patriotism and national pride, while in Croatia it is more evenly related to all the constructs. While in Serbia blind patriotism is related to all the constructs but mostly to the pride on the way the state is organized and functioning, in Croatia is primarily related to respondent’s religiosity and behaving according to national customs. On the other hand, constructive patriotism is not associated with the national identity in Serbia and with the national pride in Croatia. The comparison between countries revealed slightly but significantly higher national identity, nationalism and blind patriotism in Serbian sample then Croatian. Respondents from Serbia also report that they behave according to their national customs more and they are more proud on their accomplished individuals throughout the history and nowadays. However, there are no differences in constructive patriotism and pride of the way the state is organized and functioning. A series of ANOVAs were performed to ascertain the effects of gender, age, education level, and religiosity, as well as their interaction with nationality, on different forms of national attachment. Results are discussed regarding cultural, historical and contextual similarities and differences between the two countries.
