Sažetak
A difficulty to understanding feminism is connected to the fact that the ideology informing feminist framings has shifted over time, creating apparently distinctive waves. If we acknowledge the preceding waves of feminism are built from earlier women’s accomplishments and activism-inspired action, action manifested at different times and involving different geographies, we can better understand feminist discourse today. This paper illustrates dynamics of weaveless feminism through art representation, reflecting on the persistence of feminism, and attending to different ways women are coping with socio-economic challenges. We attend the uses of autobiography in creative practice, exploring an array of diverse subjective positions articulating gender identity construction. Specifically, we will examine representation of gender performance through recognition, identification or alteration of the family bonds-based constructions. Drawing on the selection of artworks, we explore in what ways the first person accounts can reveal different perceptions concerning a discourse of womanhood across generations as well as attempts at modifications of these constructions. The paper draws on the examples of artworks by Ana Vivoda, Croatian visual artist, one of the paper’s co-author, including the installation Relations of reciprocity (2020), the artist book series Conversations over coffee (2020), Faces (2013) and Frontiers (2017). The portraiture is reassessed, attending to challenges, revealing conflicts, confronting generational gaps in representing different feminist realities at the time. The works represent the alternative feminist positions, formed through reciprocity and relationality, constructed and reconstructed overtime in the multi-layered intertwining contexts. Articulation of wavelessness in these artworks evidences that there is no single feminist moment with a clearly defined political agenda that can be applied to analyze them. Instead, we argue that feminist discourse needs to be articulated through broader critical frameworks and applied over time.
