Sažetak
Ever since its official creation in 1830, Belgium is a complicated state. Every nation deals with different groups struggling for power. Think of capitalism versus socialism, religion versus atheism. In Belgium there is a third societal breaking point: language. Emerging from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, the only official language in the newly created country was French, even though a considerable part of its population had Dutch as native language which caused discord from the beginning. The First World War and more especially the Von Schlieffen plan became an import catalysator in the organisation of a Flemish movement striving for a better position of the Dutch language. The German army, evading the French fortifications on the French – German border, invaded neutral Belgium in hopes of a fast transit to Paris which would put an immediate end to their Western front. Plans didn’t go as expected and the German army got stuck in Belgium making them unexpectedly an occupying force. This is when the Flamenpolitik got into effect in an effort to use the discord between French and Dutch speaking Belgium. In this presentation the concept of the Flamenpolitik will be explained and its repercussions on today’s society in Belgium.
