Sažetak
The breathtaking speed and scale of protests marked Arab Spring as a historic moment in the politics of the MENA region. It seriously challenged the brick-built authoritarian edifice that imposed itself on Arabs since the end of World War II and it showed the rest of the world that the region is not an exception, that Arabs are motivated by the same basic concerns as other people around the world—the legitimate authority, inequality, unemployment, freedom, justice and human rights. Due to the participation of broad segments of the population, the radical nature of protestors’ demands, and the implication for the regional order, the uprisings of 2011 deserve to be qualified as revolutions. Albeit largely unsuccessful, the long-term consequences of these revolutions may prove to be more important than their immediate outcomes.
