Sažetak
Academic writing is one of the most challenging aspects of the teaching and learning process in ESP courses. Students are required to adopt this specific style of writing in order to cope with their current studies and future professional career. Being non-native speakers of English, students need to master second language writing skills, prevent mother tongue interference and develop intrinsic motivation to engage with writing assignments. On the other hand, ESP practitioners need to motivate students to engage in writing activities, and select the best teaching tools to make writing more appealing to students. Since writing is a rather complex process, one of the possible approaches is breaking longer textual units down into smaller segments, i.e. paragraphs. Learning how to cope with paragraphs and relating them to the whole simplifies the complexities of the material and makes the writing of longer compositions easier. This paper explores the usability of the paragraph in teaching various aspects of academic writing, e.g. academic style and register, paraphrasing and summarizing skills, coherence and cohesion, comparison and contrast, definition, exemplification, and classification. Sample paragraphs will be used to illustrate these features that constitute an integral part of academic writing.
