Sažetak
There is an abundant body of research on the relation between local and global in the field of cultural consumption. However, this research mainly concentrates on issues of cultural repertoires and sociocultural context, whereas values have been under researched in this context. That is why a new concept of banal cosmopolitanism is proposed as an attempt to describe the relation between cultural consumption and values. The term is coined as a reference to Billig’s idea of banal nationalism, reflecting the mundane, practical aspects of cultural consumption, while relying on Hannerz’s concept of cosmopolitanism as acceptance of others. Based on a quantitative research (N=2700) of high school student in major cities of Adriatic Croatia, using cluster analysis, three value types were identified: modern, transitional and traditional. It is shown that modern type is mainly correlated with highbrow cultural practices and stronger preference towards foreign cultural artefacts, whereas traditional type is more prone to be involved in local culture that uses national language. We have found a clear continuum of tastes that moves from a combination of highbrow and foreign to the “common cultural ground” to a combination of domestic and traditional genres. This continuum corresponds with value types, where modern values are correlated with foreign and highbrow, whereas traditional values are correlated with national language and traditional cultural forms. The presentation concludes that there is a positive relation between values and preference towards global culture that can be interpreted as a form of embodied cultural capital.
