Sažetak
This presentation discusses the findings of the quantitative survey conducted amongst high school students (N=2700) in six biggest Croatian cities in the Adriatic region. The main aim of the research was to establish patterns of cultural consumption of high school students with the special emphasis on the role of parental cultural and economic capital. Following Bourdieu's concept of cultural capital and recent theoretical debates on cultural consumption, we used indicators of cultural participation and taste in music and TV programme. In order to explore the relational map of cultural practices and tastes, multiple correspondence analysis was employed, with indicators of respondents and parental cultural capital as active variables. Results suggest that there are two most important dimensions that determine types of cultural consumption. First one represent a clear distinction between those who consume contemporary and global cultural content, on the one side, and those whose cultural practices are almost exclusively related to national and regional context, on the other. This axis is also related to the parental cultural capital, indicating the intergenerational transmission of cultural capital. Furthermore, results of the analysis demonstrate that affinity towards “elite” or “high” culture is related with affinity towards contemporary and globalized cultural content, indicating the cultural “omnivores”. The second axis is mostly related towards traditional and popular culture, including popular music in local languages and popular TV formats, stretching between the poles of positive attitudes on the one side and negative attitudes on the other. This second axis is also related to the parental cultural capital, precisely to the indicators of their participation and taste in local and traditional culture. The presentation will also discuss the role of parental economic capital and social class in patterns of cultural practices and taste of youth, demonstrating the importance of cultural transmission.
