Sažetak
Iron Age elites of the Hallstatt period represented their statusmost famously through funerary practice and architecture. Fea-sting “kits”, ornamental jewellery, elaborate funerary ritual, andlastly, weapons and armour are tightly linked with the represen-tation of elite individuals in grave goods. A relatively high numberof weapons and armour found in those graves paints the picture ofthe Iron Age as violent times. The question can be raised about theuse of those weapons. From depictions on situla art we can iden-tify axes as the main fighting weapon and spears as weapons usedfrom horseback, but swords remain enigmatic. The problem oftheir function can partially be solved by metalwork wear analysisof their blades. This kind of observation can determine whetherthe swords, being a statistically far less occurring find than axes orspearheads, were used for actual battle or only as a parade weaponand a symbol of status. The same question can be expanded tothe earlier period of Late Bronze Age when swords are a commonoccurrence in hoards. Here again, the metalwork – wear analysiscan help us determine whether the swords were “sacrificed” afterbeing no longer useful to their owner or if they were never evenmeant for being used as weapons.
