Sažetak
After the breaking up of the former Yugoslavia, strong national identities have been labeled with religious prefix and religion was perceived as a distinctive element of belonging to ‘other’. Even if that was the case in more folkloristic and not spiritual sense, all major religions in the fragmented country retained specific role in the society afterwards as a consequence of the fact that during communist regime only religious organizations provided sense of freedom and belonging to the free world - even in catacombs. It is paradox that in the countries where there was strong suppression on religious issues, stronger sense of belonging to particular religious groups was maintained even more. It looks like those repressive regimes kept religion alive and even stronger. As a consequence, Western Europe in its freedom, developed itself more ‘freely’, but departed from spirituality while Eastern part remained more traditional and spiritual. Excellent example of that is recent change of the Constitution by popular vote in Croatia, unique event in modern European legal history. In Croatia people on referendum decided to define marriage as a union of man and woman. All major religious groups were in favor of proposed amendment and regardless of historical hostilities, members of all ethnic and religious groups have shown that despite differences they share one unique identity - religious and traditional one.
