Sažetak
Due to the complex political and economic context of the 1990s, the whole understanding of the sustainability concept in Croatia was somewhat slower than in the rest of Europe. The participation of a Croatian delegation at a summit in Rio was very important for Croatia. Soon after the summit in Rio, the Croatian Directorate for Environmental Protection, in April 1993 published a popular version of Agenda 21 [Ke93], aiming to educate the wider public about the agreements from the summit and the resulting responsibilities. The report on the implementation of Agenda 21 [Re97] was published in March 1997. The interest governmental bodies showed as regards sustainability issues were promising, but the interest faded quickly. Most of the activities related to sustainability were organized and supervised by private and civil sector organizations with little participation from public institutions.
