Sažetak
The Croatian National Theatre “Ivan Zajc” is one of the most important 19th-century buildings in Rijeka. Its eclectic architecture, typical for the Fellner&Helmer atelier, that combines Neo- Renaissance and Neo-Baroque elements, with numerous references to Roman art, frescoes that have been attributed to important Austrian artists such as Gustav Klimt and Franz Matsch, has attracted interest among many scholars. However, only a few observations in relation to the sculpture – especially the sculptural program of the western (main) façade with references to the ancient Greco- Roman mythology and iconography – have been made so far. Within the studies dedicated to the Afterlife of Antiquity, it seemed befitting to give them proper attention. This paper proposes a new reading of the theatre’s western façade, its architecture and architectural decoration. It discusses the potential sculptors and provides the identification of the sculptural program in the context of the entire architecture but also within the context of the so-called Civitas Nova of late 19th- century Rijeka.
