Sažetak
The use of specialized language based on symbolic representations is a specific characteristic of chemistry. Comprehension of that language is a prerequisite for understanding and communicating chemistry. It is usually presumed that pre-service teachers are familiar with the symbolic representations regularly used in chemistry at the school level. This paper questions if that is really the case. Thirty-seven Croatian pre-service chemistry teachers from the Faculty of Science, University of Split, participated in the research study. The investigation was focused on (a) the meanings that Croatian pre-service teachers attribute to symbols commonly used in chemical equations and expressions, (b) their ability to translate content given in one representational form into another and (c) their understanding of particular pictorial representations. The majority of Croatian pre- service teachers demonstrated the correct and most accurate meaning of the selected symbols commonly used in chemical equations and expressions. The results show that pre-service teachers have more problems translating chemical equations into drawings which involve sub-micro particles than translating statements given in words and symbols into mathematical expressions. Some pre-service teachers demonstrated misreading (wrongly decoding) of particular drawings.
