Sažetak
“Wanderer above the Sea Fog” (1818) by Caspar David Friedrich is one of the renowned works of art of German Romanticism. The painting depicts a young man in a suit, with his back to the viewer. He is standing on a rocky ground, gazing at the landscape covered with fog. He is both life and space wanderer captured in a moment of contemplation of self and the future. Some decades later the wanderer has appeared on Instagram, a social media that allows users to share photographs and videos. This paper compares “Wanderer above the Sea Fog” with photographs, of what we call, “Instagram wanderers” collected from publicly visible photographs that carry the hashtag “wanderer” and depict a man or a woman gazing at the landscape with their back to the viewer. The main aim of the paper is to examine the visual symbols of photographs in order to understand why the subjects have their backs turned from us, what is their relation towards the space (landscape) and the viewers (public). Also, to explore the relevance of the space and how it is related to the self of the subjects and to explore how does the semiotic construct of self apply to the subject (wanderer) on the photographs.
