Kauṣītaki-Upaniṣad, phases of the composition, successive redactions, the layers of the text, the meaning of the text, a proto-Sāṃkhya text, other early Upaniṣadic texts, the terms tanmātra and indriya in the Sāṃkhya tradition
Sažetak
Ježić advances that work by very close study of the Kauṣītaki-Upaniṣad and by approaching the text from a variety of perspectives. He begins with the traditional divisions of the text, since its adhyāyas reflect the major phases of its composition. He then studies the language of the Upaniṣad, the intellectual and cultural contexts of its different parts, the complex relations of its passages with the other early Upaniṣadic texts, stylistic evidence and the indications of internal adaptation through successive redactions. The result is a clearer understanding not only of the layers of the text, but also of its meaning, for he is able to show the purposes behind the redations and additions to the text. His work also has consequences for the more general history of Indian thought. Among its significant results is a refinement and extension of Bakker's (1982) work on the Kauṣītaki-Upaniṣad as a proto-Sāṃkhya text. In particular, he is able to explain the development of the terms tanmātra and indriya in the Sāṃkhya tradition and of its set of ten indriyas or faculties. (J. P. Brereton, Th. N. Proferes)
