Sažetak
Studies have been conducted on a ductile iron alloyed with 0.85% Ni, 0.51% Cu and 0.389% Mo and austempered at 380 C using range of austempering times from 15 to 360 minutes. Hardness and impact toughness were obtained to determine a processing window that would yield obtimum properties. The microstructural constituens developed troughout this range of time were identified and related to the properties determinated. Fractography was used to examine fracture surfaces and correlate structure to ductility cleavage present. The good impact toughness of that low alloy ductile iron is due to the microplasticity associated with both the ferrit and austenit phases ; however, martensite transformation during the a erlier stages and carbide precipitation during the later stages of austempering reduces room temperature touhghness considerably and results in a change to cleavage fracture mode.
