Sažetak
Dementia is one of the most expensive diseases among the older population. With the advancement of the disease, people need more and more help in performing basic daily functional activities. Since dementia is a clinical syndrome characterized by the loss of cognitive and emotional abilities to such an extent that it interferes with a person's daily life and activities, it is important to arrange the adequate care for the affected person. Care can be formal - in institutions like homes for elderly and disabled or non-institutional (eg. social housing assistance services) - and informal (usually family and unpaid). Caregivers and guardians can experience significant levels of emotional stress and physical strain while taking care of a family member with dementia. The caregivers taking care of a family member with dementia are more likely to accept formal services rather than those taking care of an older family member suffering from other chronic diseases. Research goal the purpose of this paper is by examining available scholarly and scientific sources to explore informal forms of care for people with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia, and to determine what kind of impact a long-term care of a sick person has on a carer's life.
