Sažetak
The phenomenon of marking ceramic loom-weights with incised or indented symbols is vastly distributed throughout the area of the Eastern Hallstatt circle. In the period of the Early Iron Age in this part of Europe, the most common shapes of loom-weights were various versions of conical or pyramidal, and a certain extent of those were marked with different combinations of lines and circles. As an example of this practice, it should be noted that at the eponymous site of the Kaptol cultural group around 30 % of all the loom-weights found so far have a certain symbol on one of their surfaces. Generally, in the Eastern Hallstatt Circle the most frequent signs were indented circles or incised lines, crosses or X-shaped symbols located on the upper part of truncated pyramidal loom-weights. There are exceptions to this rule, as throughout this area there have been found loom-weights with markings on their lateral sides, and some were even decorated with anthropomorphic symbols or shapes of other meaningful objects. Although the motive behind these marks hasn' t been proven, it is believed that they were a way of presenting the weaver that used them or that they helped their user distinguish various loom-weights by their mass. It is also possible that some of these symbols were of purely aesthetic nature.
