Sažetak
Medication management is associated with improvements in the quality of life (QoL), foremost with health outcomes and life aspects overall. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of pharmacy medication management on QoL in nursing home residents. In this 3-year randomized controlled trial, the effects of pharmacy interventions were analysed in nursing home (NH) residents situated in "Sv. Kamilo de Lellis“, Croatia. Sixty residents with the mean age of 78, 4 years (± 8, 77 years) were randomized to usual care (N=32) or intervention (N=28), with 70% (N=42) of the female gender. The Older People's Quality of Life (OPQOL-35) questionnaire was evaluated at baseline, and after three years to measure residents' QoL, as a primary outcome measure. Multilevel analyses were adjusted for baseline performance, age, and gender. Pharmacy interventions positively affected the following domains: Life overall (p=0, 033), Health (p<0, 001), Independence, control over life, freedom (p<0, 001), Home and neighbourhood (p<0, 001), Financial circumstances (p<0, 001) and Religion/culture (p=0, 004). No benefits were found on Social relationships/leisure and social activities (p=0, 783) and Psychological and emotional well-being (p=0, 203). A significant group-by-time interaction was found only for the QoL subscale Psychological and emotional wellbeing (p=0, 011): after a 3-year intervention period, the intervention group scored significantly less favorable than the control group. Following a 3-year intervention period, medication management did not demonstrate significant improvements in QoL, probably due to the expected decline in QoL with increasing human life expectancy. This study contributes to the limited research regarding the effect of medication management on resident outcomes. Further large-scale studies are recommended.
