Sažetak
Presence of pharmaceuticals in the environment, especially antibiotics has attracted increased interest among scientists. To evaluate the fate of trimethoprim in the aquatic environment, biodegradation as biotic process was investigated in the effluent wastewater. In this experimetns, it was found that trimethorpim is not biodegradable. In addition to biotic process, two abiotic processes were also studied. Hydrolytic degradation at pH- values normally found in the environment also showed trimethoprim persistence in the environment with a long half-life. In comparison to both mentioned processes, photolysis proved to be process that could lead to trimethoprim concentrations reduction. HPLC- MS/MS analysis revealed two new photodegradation products which structures were suggested on the obtained mass spectrum. The obtained results are very important for assesing the environmental fate of trimethoprim in the aquatic environment.
