Sažetak
The collapse of the socialist system in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe led to profound social, economic and political changes, which directly reflected on the development of cities. Urban agglomerations are being transformed by the spread of innovation, urban lifestyle and urban elements from the central city to the surrounding area. Suburbanization is becoming a major spatial process that continues to this day with varying intensity and characteristics. This process was particularly pronounced in large and capital cities. The research area of this paper is the urban agglomeration of Zagreb (UAZ), which during the transition was not bypassed by these changes. UAZ has 1, 086, 528 and is the largest in Croatia (about 25% of the total population). Since the middle of the 20th century, the surroundings of Zagreb have been developing under the strong influence of their central city. The socio- economic, functional and morphological structure of the settlement is changing. During the transition, there were also pronounced spatial changes in UAZ. The main process by which urban agglomeration developed is suburbanization. An important role in socio-economic and population development is carried by satellite towns, which are becoming nodes of development. In addition to satellite towns, settlements on the fringe of the city have significant dynamic development characteristics. The aim is to explain the causes and consequences of suburbanization in post- socialist Zagreb, to compare them with similar experiences in selected examples of cities in Central and Eastern Europe. The methodological framework is the model of Van der Bergov et al. and the Hall-Hay model which explain the stages of development of the urban agglomeration. Census data and fieldwork data were used.
