Sažetak
Different lifestyles, increased education and socio-demographic changes has led to the increasing demand for new tourism experiences and knowledge about cultural and heritage sites around the world. An emphasis on commercialization, entertainment, education and a greater recognition of the economic value of art, culture and heritage to the economy of local communities has evolved into what is known as creative cultural tourism. Creative cultural tourism includes more than visiting places of history and culture but also includes authentic and educational experiences related to the local way of living in the city or area. This paper addresses the importance of the creative educational component as added benefit for the development of cultural and heritage tourism by marketing destinations for visitors who want to learn about the local tangible and intangible heritage. The rapid expansion of social media, smartphones, communication apps and other technologies allows visitors to find information when they view local historic landmarks, architecture, traditional arts and crafts, archaeological sites, and local culture. The growth of multimedia has made it possible to integrate new technology, which increases the accessibility of information directly impacting the learning experience. By improving the creative educational experience with information about heritage sites and local cultures making it more accessible, it may motivate visitors to visit and learn before they arrive, without any preparation. The paper sets the framework for a comprehensive research analysis that compares two case studies: one about the ancient Diocletian's palace built for Roman Emperor in the fourth century AD in Split, Croatia and the other in the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area in New York steeped in history and culture which is known for the Hudson River School of Painters, Native American History, Dutch Explorer Henry Hudson, culture. Both case studies are currently developing the creative tourism based on their rich cultural heritage. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how creative heritage experiences may be used to motivate visitors to the travel to a destination and also motivate local residents to discover their own heritage, create a sense of civic pride and social cohesion through the visitor’s interest in their local culture and heritage. Greater appreciation of local resources may provide visitor awareness for the need to conserve protect and preserve these irreplaceable historic and cultural sites. Every community has a story...so be creative tell it!
