Sažetak
This article discusses the benefits of using bilingual and multilingual textbooks in schools with Croatian minority (Burgenland Croats) in Austria and Hungary. It begins with a brief discussion about the historical, cultural, educational and linguistic context in which Burgenland Croats live. The article emphasizes the intercultural and identity challenges in the education of autochthonous (or historical) minorities in the Austrian and Hungarian educational practice. Various ways of structuring bilingual and multilingual textbooks are presented illustrating ways of using those books to foster literacy development for bilingual learners. The advantages of bilingualism in the cognitive development of students are also discussed. It is emphasized in the intercultural context that the presence of bilingual and multilingual textbooks in the classroom or school library sends a clear message about the value of languages, cultures and intercultural relations in contemporary Central European area.
