Sažetak
In typical process plants the columns, particularly distillation columns, often represent the largest initial investment of a project. Moreover, distillation is a process with a large energy consumption. In plant operation, different techniques and methods are available for conserving and using process energy. The use of low grade heat from the condenser of a distillation column to provide heat for the reboiler is such an example. A heat pump is also a useful device. The aim of this article is to compare the design economics between conventional distillation and distillation with the use of a heat pump. For small projects and for simple choices between alternative processing schemes, a decision can usually be made by comparing the capital and operating costs.
