Sažetak
Since its excavation in the 1950s, Veternica became a well-known Palaeolithic site. The site was excavated by the late geologist Mirko Malez, who, among other things, found remains of Middle Palaeolithic settlement. The archaeological assemblage consisted of stone tools, animal bones and bone retouchers. Despite the fact that Veternica became a famous site, owing primarily to its association to the now disproven cave bear cult theory, systematic analysis of the archaeological material was not conducted for almost 70 years. However, the archaeological aspect of Veternica cave was not the only attractive feature of it. Since its discovery, the cave also became a focus of speleological and zoological research, with the latter focused on the bat populations which hibernate in the cave during the winter months. It is on these two aforementioned aspects that the visitor programme of Veternica relies on. The archaeological aspect of the tour is underrepresented, owing mostly to the absence of scientific results based on systematic research and interpretations stemming from them. In 2019, the archaeological material from the Middle Palaeolithic layers was subjected to analysis in a recently defended graduate thesis. Thus, a proposal is given on how to integrate the new data into the existing visitor programme with the goal of promoting public interest for the Neanderthals and their culture in general.
