Sažetak
Based on a random sample of 1.583 (1.154 male and 429 female) workers of the Railway transport company Zagreb the relation on higher body mass and the appearance of the rheumatic complaints caused by degenerative joint disease (RC) has been examined. The smallest percentage of RC observed in workers of both genders in the control group (relative body mass 91-110 %). In obese men the frequency of RC differs slightly from the control group (P>0.05), while in obese women this difference is for the same locations signifficant (big joints of lower extremity P<0.01, lumbar spine P<0.05, cervical spine P<0.05). Absolute body mass in men with RC was slightly higher than the mass of examinees without RC, while women with RC of spine were about 4 kilograms heavier and those with RC in hips and knees about 5.5 kilograms heavier on the average than women without RC (72.98:67.50 kg). This study also confirmed that degenerative rheumatic diseases are of multifactorial etiology and overweight is of significance only in women and only as an additional or precipitating factor.
