Sažetak
Triboluminescence (TL) is emission of light upon mechanical action on crystalline materials including grinding, scratching, crushing, or rubbing [1]. Despite the fact that TL is a well- known phenomenon since the 17th century, there is still no universal theory which could explain its origin and mechanism. The first attempt to explain such behaviour of materials was made in 1913 by Langevin, who proposed that TL occurs exclusively in piezoelectric compounds, which crystallize in non-centrosymmetric space groups. To date, however, many centrosymmetric triboluminescent have been described, and also many non- centrosymmetric which are not triboluminescent. Therefore it is generally considered that non- centrosymmetric crystal structure is not a necessary prerequisite for TL, but it was noticed that most of brightest triboluminescent compounds do indeed crystallize in non-centrosymmetric space groups [2, 3]. Copper(I) halides and pseudohalides in combination with P, N or S donor ligands often result in highly photoluminescent, and sometines in intense triboluminescent coordination compounds, out of which [Cu(SCN)(PPh3)(py)2] (py - pyridine) is the most prominent and the best known representative [4]. In this study, we have synthesized four similar copper(I) complexes: [CuBr(lut)2(PPh3)], [CuI(lut)2(PPh3)], [CuBr(col) (PPh3)], [CuI(col)(PPh3)] (lut – 3, 5-lutidine, col – 2, 4, 6-collidine). In the complexes with lut, copper atom is tetrahedrally coordinated, they crystallize in centrosymmetric space group P21/n and show intense photoluminescence, but are not triboluminescent. On the contrary, in the compounds with collidine, copper atom is trigonally coordinated, complexes crystallize in non-centrosymmetric space group P21 and show intense triboluminescence, even though they are not photoluminescent.
