Sažetak
Due to a tradition of migration, which has been applied as a survival and development strategy since the 19th and throughout the 20th century, today’s Republic of Croatia has a diaspora spread all over the world. Diaspora outreach and return policies have been part of the Croatian transition and state building process. Together with – mostly – regional immigration, return migration has decisively contributed to positive net migration until the early years of the 21st century. However, since the financial crisis and the following recession years net migration rates have dropped into minus. Emigration has significantly increased further since Croatia´s accession to the European Union. The article explores post- transition migration dynamics and policy responses. It discusses the significance of internationalization and transnational mobility as well as diaspora outreach as a development strategy for the Croatian economy and society.
