Sažetak
Student presentations play a multiple role in foreign language teaching at an institution of higher education. Presentations require students to demonstrate several competencies if they want to be successful. First of all, the theme has to be created and presented in a foreign language. This involves all language competencies, starting with knowing the vocabulary specific for a certain topic, choosing appropriate grammar structures and paying attention to spelling during the first stage of preparing the presentation. Another important component is the theme of the presentation which is always a topic related to the culture and civilisation of English- speaking countries. The aim here is to gain knowledge of the culture of another country and to note the similarities and differences to their own country. Language skills are practised but this also encourages the understanding of the customs and traditions of different nationalities, with the aim of developing mutual tolerance and the formation of a young person for the multicultural society of the future. Furthermore, knowledge of how to produce and structure presentation slides is also required. The presentation needs to be tailored to the particular audience, in this specific case it is the fellow students to whom the topic is presented. The final step in the whole process is the student's verbal presentation in a foreign language. This consolidates all the previous steps and requires confident oral articulation of words and sentences in a foreign language. As well as the presenter, there is also the audience to be considered, i.e. the students who listen to the presentation. They are an essential component of the presentation and actively participate in it by not only listening but also asking questions and providing peer evaluation of the topic presented. The fact that the evaluation of the presentation contributes to the final grade also shows how important such a teaching method is.
